About the Overlook Bluff House
Welcome to one of the oldest homes in the desirable Overlook Neighborhood. The house at 2436 N Wygant Street was built in 1925 by the Bechman family. A unique landmark in Portland, the home sits atop the Willamette River bluff with commanding views of the river, Swan Island and the West Hills.
An oversized, level yard abuts Upper Madrona Park and provides maximum privacy for entertaining and family recreation. Professionally landscaped gardens feature native plants that bloom throughout the year.
The yard and surrounding trees abound with wildlife, especially frolicking squirrels and what one Portland Parks Ranger called “the most diverse variety of bird species in the entire city.” Watch hummingbirds, eagles and everything in between from the comfort of the cedar deck (built in 2014) while listening the soothing water feature or from the home’s many large windows.
Recent owners have added space for vegetable gardening, a strawberry patch, raspberries and hops.
A large shed (former garage) provides abundant storage space for bikes, skis, golf clubs and all your outdoor gear. There is off-street parking for two vehicles on the driveway.
The home is within walking distance of bus and light rail service, the N Killingsworth Street commercial area and N Mississippi Avenue.
The bright interior of the home offers gorgeous views from almost every window. You will find three bedrooms and two full baths. This historic home with hardwood floors throughout has been updated to modern tastes while respecting the original character. A 2007 addition added 600 square feet.
The centerpiece of the main level is a remodeled gourmet kitchen with a built-in bench, counter and two walls of windows looking out on the yard. A rear family room with gas fireplace and a front living room round-out the downstairs living space.
Upstairs are three bedrooms and a laundry room. The master bedroom includes a walk-in closet. There is a second walk-in closet off the updated bath. One bedroom has a murphy bed, allowing the room to be a workout space or other flexible space.
The house was retrofitted for earthquake protection in 2019.
The owners built a 700sf secluded cottage on the property in 2014 with attention to high-quality, green finishes. It was designed to allow single-level living. The main floor includes a bedroom, bathroom with walk-in shower, living space and kitchen. An open loft completes the space.
Skylights and oversized sliding doors let in light year-round and provide views of the gardens, wildlife and the Willamette River. The cottage has only been used for multigenerational living, but it could serve as a home-office, guesthouse or rental unit. It is a legal ADU.
